Research Institutions
Research and development is a strong leader in San Diego's future economic development. The area's institutions of higher learning have established San Diego as a top-rate research community. In addition to public non-profit research centers, more than 300 private firms conduct research under government contracts. UCSD, a major magnet for research institutions, ranks among the nation's top 15 in the amount of funds received from the National Science Foundation and fifth among all U.S. colleges and universities in attracting federal research grants.
